SUPERHERO SATURDAY: SDCC 2019 Saturday Round-Up

Welcome welcome one and all to the biggest article you will read all weekend (on this site anyway). It’s Superhero Saturday! It’s our busiest day today with a grand total of twenty-two panels, many of which are on at the same time and with press happening all day for them. How am I alive? I do not know but for all of you left standing after the end of this mammoth day, here is your round-up of SDCC day three!

Batwoman Pilot Screening and Q&A, Ballroom 20, 10:30am

via CW and EW

Today’s first panel kicked us off completely for Superhero Saturday! We learned that in episode 1×03 a great villain will appear and that Alice is big bad in the season with the Villain ‘Hush’ also set to appear. The showrunners announced that Batwoman will try to match Arrow s1 in terms of flashbacks but they will be all over the place chronologically as there are a lot of different times in Kate Kane’s life that made her who she is.

There will be all-new villains in this series with no repeats from any other Arrowverse show. We should expect to see a close SuperGirl and Batwoman relationship and in the future. We will see a lot of them together, so after ‘Crisis’, we may see the two together in more than one adventure. We also learned that Batwoman is technically set on Earth 1, so in the same world as Arrow and The Flash, but with the crossover coming up, that could change.

In terms of the questions surrounding Bruce Wayne/Batman, it was mentioned that he might appear eventually on Batwoman but the producers say that WB has such a tight grip on the character. It was announced that Burt Ward will make a cameo this season.7

Batwoman will premiere on the CW on October 6, 2019.

Enter the Star Trek Universe Panel, Hall H, 11:30am

via CBS

Let’s split this one up into three sections, one for Star Trek Discovery, one for Short Treks, one for Lower Decks and one for Picard.

For Star Trek Discovery, we learned that David Ajala has been cast as Cleveland ‘Book’ Booker.

For the Short Treks, it was announced that 6 would be released. Anson Mount will return as Captain Pike of the Starship Enterprise on new episodes of Short Treks. Spock and Number One will also return. Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn for 3 new Enterprise Short Treks. One Short Trek will be a Picard prequel and Michael Chabon has written a Short Treks about Spock stuck in a Turbo Lift!

Rick and Morty screenwriter Mike McMahan came up with the idea to do animated stories that occur on the Lower Decks on the ships of Starfleet. It is a half-hour animated show, focusing on four ensigns serving on a non-important ship and it t takes place in 2380, after Nemesis. Tawny Newsome plays Ensign Mariner with Jack Quaid playing Ensign Brad Boimler.  The characters clash – there’s lots of ‘Pearl clutching’ Jerry O’Connell is also slated to join Lower Decks coming in 2020.

Picard came last where we learned that we get “to see the most unknown part of his journey”. Alison Pill plays a researcher in the series and Michelle Hurd plays someone who also was part of Picard’s past. Evan Evagora on joining Picard as a series regular alongside Brent Spiner as Data and Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine. Jonathan Frakes is also confirmed to reprise the role of Riker in Picard.

To top it all off, there will now be an official Star Trek Podcast.

In its final year and final SDCC panel, it was announced throughout the day that Katie Cassidy Rogers will be directing episode one of season 8. When speaking about the show ending, Exec producer Marc Guggenheim stated “We all kind of want to leave the party while it’s still going.” and cited logistical and budgetary limitations going into the 8th season as one issue they faced.

In casting news, Charlie Barnett will be playing adult John Jr. with Ben Lewis, Joseph David-Jones and Katherine McNamara moving into a series regular spot.

Stephen Amell has revealed that he will perform several versions of Oliver Queen in the upcoming crossover “Crisis on Infinite Earths’. He was joined on stage by Brandon Routh of ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ who will get a new Superman suit for the crossover to portray the “Kingdom Come” Superman. Amell claimed that Arrow will end happily. The crowd doesn’t believe it.

There was a special surprise moderator in the for, of  Lex Luthor himself, Jon Cryer, who it was announced is back for the crossover.

Two new Series Regulars join the cast in the form of Julie Gonzalo as DC Character Andrea Rojas as Acrata and Staz Nair as an original character William Dey who is a Renowned Reporter. It was also announced that Megan Rath, Jesse’s sister, will join the cast as a female Brainiac 5. It was also revealed this weekend that Mechad Brooks will be leaving the show midseason and will have a great storyline to tangle with before his amicable departure to pursue other goals. Fan favourite Jeremy Jordan, aka Winn Schott, will be back for a three-episode run after his run on Broadway’s ‘Waitress’ comes to an end.

Melissa Benoist will make her directorial debut and says that when she reads the script, she can’t help but think of how she would want it to look. She’s very excited to bring her imagination to life.

Following the news this weekend of Andrea Brooks real-life pregnancy, Jon Cryer wanted to make it clear that Miss Tessmacher is not having “baby Lex!”

Katie McGrath does not confirm or deny that Lena is going to become a new Lex Luthor. McGrath loves the fact that Lena is flawed and brilliant. “Yes she has been given this horrible news, but the question for Lena in season five is whether or not it defines her.”

It was confirmed that Leviathan will be a villain this season as well as focusing on technology. This will be known as its ‘Black Mirror’ season.

Supergirl will return on Sunday 6th October 2019.

“We’re gonna make it the Earpiest season of Earp that ever Earped.” stated showrunner, Emily Andras, when talking about Season 4.

The cast then answered questions about what they would like to see happen in Season 4. Yes, after a long hard battle with billboards in Time Square, phone calls, emails and tweets, #FightForWynonna turned into #WinForWynonna!
